James Frisby Testimonial (Click image to view clip)

James Frisby Testimonial In 1991 I was teaching at a community college in Los Angeles when I began experiencing serious fatigue and difficulties with my handwriting. These symptoms interfered with my ability to teach and participate actively in the classroom, and I sought medical attention. A local neurologist diagnosed me with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). This physician initially prescribed Sinemet, to which I responded immediately, and for the next thirteen years I continued to take this medication with diminishing success. However, as time passed, the side effects grew worse as the dosage increased. Eventually, I was started on a study medication as a last effort to quell the progression of my symptoms. Then the study was stopped, leaving me completely disabled, no longer able to walk or take care of normal household chores. Also, I lost all expression in my voice and face. I was 69 years old and unable to care for myself. I felt discouraged. This was not what I had expected my retirement to be.

Looking for a way to improve my situation, a good friend located Dr. Igor Fineman and Dr Jai Rho, a movement disorder group specializing in the care of people with Parkinson’s Disease. I met with both of them, and they recommended that I undergo surgery to place two separate brain implants called Deep Brain Stimulators (DBS) to relieve some of my symptoms. My surgeries took place in April and May of 2004, and I experienced immediate improvement, especially after the second surgery. I was now able to change positions in bed; prior to surgery I would lie in bed all night with out shifting. Since the surgeries, I have regained flexibility and the ability to walk. My leg muscles had atrophied, and I am still working on them with walks and gym visits three times a week. I am independent again, with the exception of some assistance with freeway driving, and although I have not returned to work, I have my smile back.
